NORA Research School Held its First Annual Conference

On the 16th of November, NORA.ai hosted the first NORA Research School Annual Conference, where we gathered over 50 PhD students affiliated with Norwegian universities and members of the NORA Research School.

NORA Research School Annual Conference, where we gathered over 50 PhD students affiliated with Norwegian universities and members of the NORA Research School.

The conference's purpose is to bring together Research School members and offer training on topics suggested by the community. Additionally, the conference provides a platform where you can network, share your research, and increase research collaboration.

We had a great lineup of speakers from academia and industry, with four parallel workshops led by PhD candidates covering a range of topics, from transformer models to the industrial use of AI.

  • Akriti Sharma, from OsloMet, led the first workshop on XAI. The workshop introduced the concept of XAI and discussed some of the challenges in making AI systems more transparent.
  • Ghadi Al-Hajj, from the University of Oslo, led the second workshop on Transformers, covering transformer models and how they can be used for various tasks, such as machine translation and text classification.
  • Mariyam Khan, from the University of Bergen, led the third workshop on Causal Inference, introducing the basics of causal inference and discussing some challenges in applying it to machine learning tasks.
  • Jassem Abbasi, from the University of Stavanger, led the fourth workshop on the Industrial Use of AI, exploring some of how AI is being used in industry today, in particular by Vake AI and Earth Science Analytics AS.

The NORA Research School Annual Conference was a huge success, and we look forward to next year. We had a great turnout, and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive. The conference will become an annual event for the NORA Research School members. If you are a PhD affiliated with one of the NORA partner institutions, we encourage you to register now and become part of many exciting activities.

We are grateful to everyone involved in organizing this event, especially Kristiania University College, for providing the location and support throughout the conference. Thank you, Morten Irgens, Noha El-Ganainy, and Tor-Morten Grønli!
